How to install FCS 2 fins

The worst of FCS 2

All that glitters is not gold. Despite the main advantage of these fins being how easy they are to put on and take off, the truth is that in practice it is not so easy. If you don’t put them on correctly, you risk losing them.

How to install FCS 2 fins

FCSII is a keyless system. Next, we will explain step by step how to put on the fcs 2 fins on your board.

  1. To insert a fin into the box, place the front tab of the fin into the front slot of the plug. So that the hook of the fin’s tabs meets the horizontal bar inside the slot.
  2. Then, lower the back tab into the back slot of the box until the mechanism engages the tab.
  3. Once engaged, simply apply downward pressure until the fin snaps into place.
  4. Check that the fin lies flat against the underside of the board.
  5. Repeat this step with the remaining fins.

Tip: Before installing your fins, make sure the board is on a stable surface to prevent damage. It’s also a good idea to have one hand under the rail for support.

Each set of FCSII fins includes a complete instruction manual on how to install and remove them. It is true that sometimes they are so well attached to the board that you have to apply a lot of force to remove them. Hence tools like the Fin Puller have appeared , to remove them.

What is the Fin Puller?

The Fin Puller is a system to easily remove the fins from your surfboard. Works with any removable fin system. Included FCS II and Futures. It is designed in California and marketed worldwide. Regarding aesthetics, the Fin Puller is like a strip that is inserted into the fins and facilitates their removal.

Loss of FCS 2 fins

The FCSII system has a high fin retention force (around 12kg). This means that the fins cannot be removed from the system by applying force in the front or side, i.e., the direction of the forces applied to the fin during surfing cannot dislodge the fin. An FCS 2 can only be removed from the system by applying upward force. So fin losses during surfing are due to incorrect installation.

In any case, if you are unlucky enough to lose a fin while surfing, we have good news for you. You are not alone. Check out Facebook groups like «second-hand fcs 2 fins» and you will surely find someone selling individual fins instead of the whole set. You will save a good amount of money.

And if it breaks…

The FCSII mechanism has been designed to work in a highly corrosive environment. All materials used to build the FCSII plugs have been selected for their anti-corrosive properties, including titanium, which is an inert material (does not rust). If sand gets into the plug, the mechanism will not be restricted and the sand will come out through the cavities of the open slot.
